Ever since the discovery of the South Sea by Vasco Nuñez de Balboa in 1513, efforts and explorations were made to connect the Atlantic with the Pacific, first by the discoverer of such ocean, Balboa,  then by Columbus, later by the spanish king, Charles V, and afterwards by the scotish Patterson. Nothing was really done until De Lesseps arrived and started the construction in 1881.

Some facts about Panama

The name Panama means abundance of fish, that is what the founder of the city, Pedro Arias de Avila wrote in a letter to the king of Spain, Fernando, back in 1521. 

Today, some guides will tell you that the name means abundance of butterflies, abundance of trees or abundance of water, all that is made up just to make the history of Panama more flowery.

The expansion project...

As I write these lines a new set of entrances and exits are being finished on both ends of the Panama canal.

The Great canal that was built between 1881 and 1914 is now being widened to accept larger ships.

Let´s remember that most of the canal is a huge artificial lake in the mountains.

Gatun lake in the middle of the country is the main body of water of the Panama Canal.
